AA.N.A.Abbreviation for the "American Numistmatic Association".
AA.U.See "About Uncirculated" or "Almost Uncirculated".
AAbout GoodHeavily worn; date may be barely discernable. While notes more worn than AG are rarely collected, two additional grades are nevertheless used to characterize them.
AAbout UncirculatedSame as "Almost Uncirculated". Sometimes abbreviated as "AU".
AAbrasionMarks or small scratches on the surface of a coin where another coin or object has slid across or bumped the coin. Can also be caused by the coin sliding in a holder or coin drawer. Not as deep or noticeable as bag marks. Usually found on the high parts of a coin or in the open fields (background).
AAccountA sum stated on paper (or in a magnetoelectronic data bank).A business transaction, especially one in which credit is used.
AAccount, money ofMoney without physical representation (eg, coin, papermoney) used for accounting purposes only. Loosely, also "denominations" for which coins or papermonies do not exists; examples include one bit (USA$0.125), one mill ($0.001), and the British guinea (21 Shillings = £1/1/-).
AAccumulationA group of coins, sometimes not of any certain type or date. Also can be a "hoard".
AAdvertising NoteA Simulated note with no redeemable value, issued solely for advertising purposes. Advertising coins and stamps are conceivable.

AAllegoryA symbol which metaphorically depicts a more complex concept. On papermonies, allegorical vignettes almost always in-clude at least one human figure. For example, Mercury, the Roman god of merchants & trading, is often found in allegories of transpor-tation, commerce, communication, and lately, telecommunications.
AAllied Military Currency (-ies)Occupation notes issued by the Allied Military Administration (USA, England, Free France, and USSR), shortly after the end of World War Two, for Austria, Germany, Italy, and France; slightly later also for Japan (USA only).
AAlloyA mixture of two or more metals melted into one compound.
AAlmost UncirculatedA coin or paper money note that is very close to being uncirculated. Upon first glance it may appear uncirculated. When inspected closely it will have a slight amount of wear or friction. Same as "About Uncirculated". Sometimes abbreviated as "AU".
AAlterationSee Altered Date.
AAlteredDeliberately changed, usually unofficially and with the intent to illegally increase the face value or the collector value. With certain paper documents, such as a check, the name of either the payer or payee can be changed for illegal gain.
